Needless to say, Eve Lindley’s raw talent meant she could be easily molded into delivering a wonderful performance, irrespective of the difficulty. It was exactly the same way I felt when Russell Brand auditioned for Forgetting Sarah Marshall, where I was like, "Oh, this changes everything - in the best possible way." Everything becomes richer, you know? Meanwhile, Segel also revealed what it’s like when someone as talented as Eve, but relatively unknown, walks into auditions. Besides being trans, Segel believes she’s a brilliant writer and comedian in her own right. The first involved the trans writer of the AMC show named Patti Harrison, who was incredibly valuable with her expert inputs. Segel revealed they approached this in two ways. Her character, a trans woman, is Segel’s partner in the scavenger hunt, and there were certain challenges to ensure the accurate portrayal of Eve’s role. The rest of the notable cast includes Andre Benjamin, Cecilia Balagot, Richard E. Peter, Simone, Janice and Fredwynn would have all missed the point entirely. One of the most notable cast members in the new AMC series is a transgender actress, Eve Lindley, who could potentially enjoy the biggest breakthrough of her career working alongside one of the most popular faces in the television history. Watching The Institute, you can see that the actual game was playful and silly and only meant to be taken seriously as a way to bring a bit of wonder back to everyday life. "Is anyone else really high?" asks a random participant at the Jejune "shareholders meeting" in the third episode, and being really high seems like the right state of mind to either watch this show or participate in the real-life Jejune experience. Pretty much everything on Dispatches is poorly explained, which is part of the point, but is also increasingly tiresome even after just four episodes. The show suffers when it foregrounds these characters, although Field gets some lovely moments as Janice confronts her younger self via some poorly explained virtual-reality device. Janice - despite being played by the talented Field - and Fredwynn are far less interesting characters than the combination of Peter and Simone, especially given Fredwynn's grating insistence on dark conspiracies. But whatever deeper truths about life he intends to convey don't come across in these early episodes, which are mostly disjointed and repetitive, as each episode shifts perspective to focus on a different main character. The game (or whatever it is) brings new meaning and vitality to the lives of the main characters, and the real-life story may have done the same for Segel. The show feels like a very personal project for Segel, who's largely been out of the spotlight since How I Met Your Mother ended in 2014. Segel created the series, wrote and directed the opening episode and wrote or co-wrote the next two. Yet, it's still never clear what's actually happening, and the creators seem reluctant to commit to any answers, even about the basic nature of the story. By the end of the four episodes available for review, the story has taken a turn into some hardcore conspiracy territory, and the technology that the characters encounter has progressed far beyond the chalk drawings and community-theater antics of the real-life game. It's hard to imagine the show sustaining even its single 10-episode season (it's been billed as an anthology, and Grant's Octavio, who also serves as the narrator, mentions in the first episode that it's a limited series) if all the characters are doing is playing a really detailed game.
